Another Game Night

Katie’s confusion only got more and more… Well, confusing as the week wore on.

Danielle would occasionally smile and hit her with a look that reminded her of everything they’d done the previous weekend. Most of the time, though, she seemed perfectly content to be hanging on Nathan.

It didn’t help that they finally consolidated their lunch tables. Danielle and Nathan seemed to finally decide they’d sit with Katie, Alyssa, and Devon. Which meant some of the other people from their old table had moved over, crowding Katie out.

She wasn’t sure what to think about that. She’d always thought it might be nice to sit at one of the tables where there were a lot of people hanging out, and she figured she should’ve been happy that she was at a table with the “popular kids,” but at the same time she found herself missing the old dynamic where it was just her, Nathan, and Alyssa.

Sure it wasn’t quite as nice in retrospect now that she’d realized Nathan was only hitting on her because he was trying to get in her pants, something he’d been destined to fail at from the very beginning, but still.

And so it was that she came into game night the next Friday even more confused than she’d been last weekend.

“Katie!” Alyssa said, pulling her into a huge hug as she walked down the hall. “Good to see you!”

“What are you talking about?” Katie asked. “We see each other all the time at these games.”

“Well yeah,” Alyssa said. “But that doesn’t mean it isn’t good to see you, you know?”

Katie’s eyes narrowed as she looked at her friend. “What are you doing?”

“I’m not doing anything,” Alyssa said, though as they moved down the hallway Alyssa took her hand and kept her moving past the band hallway.

“Where are you going?” Katie asked. “We have to get ready.”

“There’s like a half-hour before we even have to start warming up,” Alyssa said, waving a dismissive hand. “Come on. I think you’re going to want to see this.”

“Want to see what?” Katie asked, frowning in confusion.

“Hi, Katie,” a familiar voice said from the side.

Katie turned, and she wasn’t at all surprised to see Danielle standing there by the entrance to the library.

“Danielle,” she said, her voice carefully neutral.

“Katie,” Danielle said, talking in an equally flat voice that was definitely meant to mock her tone if the smile on Danielle’s face was anything to go on.

“What are you doing here?” Katie asked.

“I could ask you the same thing,” Danielle said.

“What are you talking about?” Katie asked. “You literally had Alyssa take me over here where you’re sneaking around. Why would you ask me what I’m doing here when you had our mutual friend bring me over here?”

Alyssa let out a giggle that she barely managed to contain. Meanwhile Danielle rolled her eyes.

“The lady has a point,” Alyssa said.

“So why don’t you just say what’s going on here?” Katie said, deciding to cut through all the bullshit. “You want to make out with me again in secret.
